ABSTRACT

In the 21st century, global supply chains have experienced severe risks due to disruptions caused by crises and serious diseases, such as the great tsunami, SARS, and, more recently, COVID-19. Building a resilient supply chain is necessary for business survival and growth. Similarly, there is increasing regulatory and social pressure for managers to continuously design and implement sustainable supply chain networks, encompassing economic, social, and environmental components. Hence, a panacea approach is required to establish a compromise position between resiliency concerns and sustainability responsibilities. To address this, this work presents a hybrid integrated BWM-CoCoSo-multi-objective programming model (BC-MOPM) formulated to deliver a compromise between resilience and sustainability supply chain network design (RS-SCND). First, a thorough literature review analysis is conducted to explore the relationship and correlation between resilience and sustainability to develop a framework for the resiliency and sustainability criteria, in a supply chain context. Second, four objectives were formulated, including the minimisation of total cost and environmental impact and the maximisation of social and resilience paradigms. A real two-tier supply chain network is deployed to evaluate the applicability of the developed BC-MOPM. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis is conducted to establish the relative importance of the identified criteria to prove the model's robustness. Results demonstrate the capability of the BC-MOPM in revealing trade-offs between the resiliency and sustainability aspects. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

ABSTRACT

The year 2020 has been challenging for the whole world due to the COVID pandemic. The unprecedented impacts of the world's recent lockdown and volatility of oil and gas markets tested the leadership and resilience of business models and repositioned strategies that will shape the industry for the next decade. Business survival has become critical during these unprecedented times, especially in the energy industry which has taken a significant hit due to the oil price fall and supply gluts. Existing plans are under observation, as it is vital to identify more efficient approaches and solutions for building future business resilience. Modern technologies can be used to support energy transition. The surface jet pump is one of the newest technologies that help lower the wellhead pressure of the well. It also reduces back pressure on the well. Thus, it enhances the flow rate. Additionally, the surface jet pump overcomes the flow line pressure into the existing pressurized flow lines without creating back pressure on the reservoirs. This technology can be utilized for many applications, including well-bore cleanup after completions, de-liquefying gas wells, producing heavy, viscous, or corrosive liquids, producing CO2 and natural gas wells. This paper is about the successful installation of the first-ever surface jet pump in the country. The pump was deployed in the Northern Iraq region to reduce the backpressure on the wells caused by the central production facility. The pump parameters were designed on Jet Evaluation and Modeling Software (JEMS) and 13G was selected as the optimum nozzle and throat combination for this project. The pump worked successfully, and the wellhead increased from 310 to 355 psi. And gross production from a single well was increased to around 850 BPD from 550 BPD generating about 0.4 Million USD/Month additional revenue. With the long-term impact of the recent pandemic on the energy market, it's clear that companies are more focused than ever on picking the best solutions to ensure the long-term viability and survival of their operations. The surface jet pump is one of the technological advancements for such solutions that have been successfully tested at this location. This paper goes on the technicalities of the technology and project. Copyright © 2022, Offshore Technology Conference.

ABSTRACT

The global recession due to the pandemic has knocked the business landscape and brought the world to its knees. There were a number of renowned companies that made the headlines for being the top industry hard hits. Nonetheless, there were businesses that survived this pandemic and navigated the COVID complexities so effectively that it tipped the scales in their favor. We attempt to study the factors that helped these businesses masterfully work their way through the conundrums of coronavirus pandemic. We first build a dataset that entailed information pertinent to businesses and relevant COVID-related information that was sourced from Yelp and other platforms. We used a variety of classifiers to make predictions about the survival of these businesses followed by that after assessing their performance through varied methods. The model efficiency was classified based on several rating techniques to evaluate both underperforming and profitable businesses. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

Micro and small enterprises (MSEs) are important to the local economy and are the most crucial source of employment in Thailand. Using the three-round survey data, we assess the impact of COVID-19 on the survival probability of MSEs in the tourism and manufacturing sectors. Enter-prise characteristics such as owner characteristics, employment and business strategies are examined as potential factors to mitigate or stimulate business failures. The Cox proportional hazards model and Kaplan-Meier estimator are employed. Our findings reveal that the survival probability paths from the three rounds of survey show a gradual decrease of survival probability from the first week of interview and approximately 50% of MSEs could not survive longer than 52 weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also find that the survival of MSEs mainly depends on location, number of employees, and business model adjustment, namely operation with social distancing and online marketing. Particularly, retaining employees and not reducing the working hours are one of the key factors increasing the survivability of MSEs. However, the longer length of the crisis reduces the contribution of these key factors. The longer the period of the COVID-19 pandemic, the lower the chance of MSEs survivability.

ABSTRACT

There exists a noticeable void in the literature about strategies that business operators, especially those in highly vulnerable economies, can adapt to sustain their survival and to achieve growth in economically turbulent times. This study investigated strategies that can support the viability and survival of businesses in times of environmental disruptions. The study adopted a qualitative research design that involved the interview of 31 business owners across different sectoral groups including fashion and telecommunication that are operating in Nigeria's Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) sector. The interview sessions were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed. The findings reveal that amid disruptions, the business owners were resilient and established diverse digital strategies that helped them to keep their businesses afloat throughout the time of disruption. This finding contributes to the field of entrepreneurship as it offers practical strategies for supporting business owners during times of disruptions, especially in a developing country context.

ABSTRACT

The jamu (Indonesian traditional herbal drink) industry has grown in popularity because of people's increased interest in the qualities of herbal remedies for bodily immunity. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected not only the market but also how businesses have managed their supply chains and production. COVID-19 has been claimed to be a test of a company's long-term viability. Sustainability refers to a company's ability to last a long time (corporate longevity). The tug of war between economic prosperity, environmental quality, and social justice that guarantees enterprises are profitable and sustainable is the main issue for companies in developing governance. From a theoretical standpoint, longevity is an intriguing problem. There are two types of corporate longevity: corporate longevity (CL) and corporate sustainable longevity (CSL). Little research has specifically examined the internal aspects of CSL. It necessitates several specific characteristics that all play a role in CSL. This research intends to highlight operational resilience as a crucial predictor of CSL's significance in the jamu business. Companies that have consistently produced and benefitted from their business operations, before, during, and after the pandemic, have faced challenges of sustainability or longevity. Predecessor independent variables, and moderating or mediating variables, can be used to enable the operational resilience stance. To achieve CSL, the company must know how much it will determine its position in numerous ways in company practice. This study contributes to exploring dimensions and indicators of operational resilience to determine CSL in its relevance to the jamu industry. Different roles for operational resilience in different industry practices are also feasible.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 triggered a severe disruption in businesses worldwide, with pressing changes aimed business survival and striving. In this context, the pace of the digital transformation of business was tremendously accelerated, launching managers and employees into a new world of digital challenges. In this work, we explore the dynamic capabilities of businesses to cope with the COVID-19 contingencies, focusing on survival and success measures, dynamic digital capabilities and emerging management skills. We interviewed 24 business managers using semi-structured interviews and mixed-methods research to reveal how these businesses have coped during the second wave of COVID-19 in the country. Our results show that little to no governmental and financial support was received, and overall negative impact on the business potential to succeed at several levels, with little exceptions. Most businesses reveal having dynamic digital capabilities in place and ability to take advantage of their digital presence to foster business survival and growth. These capabilities are, however, heavily built on what we believe to be core emerging business management skills, as they are associated with several areas of expertise in the domain of digital communication. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

Small firms make huge contributions to the circular economy. However, survival of these firms has been a concern, more so in the context of COVID-19. Hence, it is critical to understand the factors predicting business survival chances of small firms. The present study examines whether owners’ resilience (a psychological resource) is positively related to small firms’ business survival chances during the pandemic. We borrowed from the broaden-and-build theory to posit that psychological resilience provides a broadened repertoire of resources which help in coping with depression, leading to higher chances of business survival. Further, using a sample of 657 small firm owners, we investigated if direct and indirect linkages between psychological resilience and business survival chances change with owners’ experience of financial fragility (i.e., lack of financial resources). Our study carries significant implications for theory and practice.
